gender bender
Women, as the prime possession of the patriarch, are valuable in their chastity.
Even so, as a Dalit woman, your chastity cannot be protected like an upper caste woman’s, your goodness therefore, dies even as you are born into your new family.
The burden of a Dalit man when a beautiful girl is born to him! How can he protect her from the wandering eyes of men who are stronger than him in society’s eyes?
Identities are fractured creations, you are not a human being, you are a woman.
you are not just a woman, you are a Jacobite woman and the priest will put your husband’s ring on your hand and read out how warnings against women from Proverbs at your wedding.
you are not just Jacobite, you are descended from the earliest Malayalis taught at St’ Thomas’ knees and therefore, of aristocratic lineage. You were once Brahmin, and you may choose a husband who is a Brahmin Christian.
You are not just Malayali, you are from Kottayam, and you know what they say about Kottayam achayans. A friend says, “as an archetype, filthy rich spoilt men who love themselves a little too much. they are the top rung of snobs in kerala.”
You are everything that was breathed before you were born, you carry your grandparents on your shoulder and in your bones and every response you ever make forms part of the pool of labels you belong to – even if you are simply a reaction to all the labels stuck on you.

the plunge
The pic is of the hogenakkal waterfalls – which i saw being used fora) washing off oil after the ayurvedic massage offered there
b) washing clothes, utensils, you name it
c) boating in these cute round boats called parasils. if the boatman likes you he spins the boat around in the same spot, which frankly, doesn’t make you like the boatman very much
First Post
I’m in a workshop, where we’re upgrading our web-related skills. So this is the first post in a new blog, and I thought I’d start it by reviewing what the first 28 days of this year have been like.
Things I’ve done:
1. spent a week in a village with naxalites, child marriage, female foeticide, the 1st rural bpo in the country and vanishing livelihoods
2. spent a weekend in mahabalipuram and bought a top that was darned with gold thread
3. spent a weekend in pondicherry and lay on the rocks under the stars while a band played rock music in the background
4. hugged – or rather, was hugged by – mata amritanandamayi out of curiosity, but was surprised to smell her fragrance for the next five hours, even when we were miles away
5. ate hashbrown omlette with baked beans, potato wedges and bread with an after eight mint shake last night
Things I will do in the next 4 hours:
1. Have my own domain name website! woohoo!
as you can guess the posts that will pepper this blog will be intermittent, dotted with badly concealed narcississm and digressions on things i ate.
welcome to my world!
